Safe Words for BDSM

Safe Words for BDSM

We’ve previously looked into the best way to develop your Master/Slave relationship. But as part of that, you will need to make sure your sexual play is fun and above all safe. This means having a safe word that both you and your partner discuss so that whatever's being done to you, will stop immediately.

Deciding your safe words before sex allows you to be as rough or kinky as you and your partner like. Your safe word can be anything, but it’s best if they are words a bit out of context. Some couples like to use words like “stop” and “no” within their sexual play making them words best to avoid. A safe word let’s you know when your partner really means ‘no’ or ‘stop’ without it appearing to be part of the sexy scenario.

There is a wide world of safe words that people use, and some of them may surprise you. We have scoured the internet and compiled a list, ranking the most frequently used words.

Top 10 Safe Words

  1. Red
  2. Pineapple
  3. Banana
  4. Orange
  5. Peach
  6. Apple
  7. Vanilla
  8. Yellow
  9. Blue
  10. Unicorn

Red takes top spot, but as you can see from the list, fruit feature quite prominently. They make good safe words because they don’t really fit in with a sexual context, and so make for a good way of highlighting when to stop.

There is also, the traffic light, it’s simple:

Green – for when you’re enjoying what your partner is doing

Yellow/Amber – You can use this if you want to let your partner know that they’re getting close to your limits.

Red – Use this when your play needs to stop. No questions.

As you can see, you can choose almost any word as your safe word as long as you and your partner know what they are and what they mean - and that they are sufficiently removed from the context of sex.

Calling out Donald Trump, or Justin Bieber when things get hot and heavy could be the ideal way of signalling when to bring things to an end. The sky's the limit!

If you are gagged, you will need to use a none verbal form of the ‘safe word’. It is best to come up with a signal such as tapping in a specific pattern or snapping your fingers. If you are bound as well, you can also have a blinking pattern or shaking of your head in a specific manner that will be your official ‘stop’. Thanks for reaching out to us!
